The sacred state of absolute purity assumed by pilgrims for undertaking the holy rituals of Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages is known as ‘Ihram’. However, the word Ihram is also used to refer to the specific clothing that is worn during this time. So, it can be said that Ihram is a necessary state which when pilgrims traveling with hajj 2022 package assume, certain prohibitions are imposed for them. Pilgrims must abide by these rules and regulations until their holy rituals are complete and they denounce the state of Ihram. Here’s a brief guide on the prohibitions imposed in Ihram.

Wearing scent.

When in Ihram, pilgrims are not allowed to wear any sort of scents. Let it be in form of perfume, cologne, or other fragrance. As a matter of fact, it’s also advised to avoid using scented toiletries out of caution.

Covering face or hands (for women).

Female pilgrims, in ihram, cannot cover their faces (wearing a veil) and their hands (wearing gloves). It is as per the Islamic teachings.

Hunting an animal.

In the state of ihram, a pilgrim cannot hunt animals or even kill insects. However, doing so is permissible when done for self-defense i.e., the animal/insect poses a life/health hazard for you.

Covering of head and ankles (for men).

For the male pilgrims covering their heads is prohibited. Therefore, men cannot wear any sort of head coverings in Ihram but using an umbrella for providing shade under sunlight is permissible. Male pilgrims’ feet along with the ankles should remain uncovered at all times i.e., men shouldn’t wear such footwear that covers their feet or ankles. Moreover, wearing any type of stitched clothing in Ihram is also prohibited for men.

Physical Intimacy with Spouse.

When a person assumes ihram, having physical intimacy with a spouse becomes prohibited. If a man is in Ihram but his wife is not, it’s forbidden for her to enable her husband towards physical intimacy and vice versa. Otherwise, if anyone does so, a penalty might be due to him/her. In fact, in some cases, your hajj/umrah itself can become invalid.

Trimming of nails/hair.

Pilgrims cannot clip their nails and trim their hair in Ihram. Falling hair is not a problem until and unless it remains a natural hair fall. Otherwise, a penalty is due for such a pilgrim that trims its nails or hair in Ihram. These are some of the prohibitions imposed in Ihram. These are some of the things that you must necessarily avoid in the state of Ihram.
